Why an Independent Creative Project?
This year I started homeschooling 3 kids who grew up in public schools. They came home for a variety of reasons, but one thing they had in common was their inability to work creatively and independently. When I’d give a project, they would stare at me glassy eyed until I gave them detailed instructions and were so scared of a bad grade that I never got to see their true talent and they were not experiencing the joy of learning!
So I changed the game. The workbooks and schedules went out the door, the directions were lose, the grading was reward based and I stayed completely out of it. The results were phenomenal. I started seeing a spark of interest. I started seeing them come out of their box and try new things. They started asking questions. And they truly started creating. That creating led to investigating and before I knew it, they were pursuing learning full throttle.
As I started sharing what we were doing with both beginner and veteran homeschoolers, so I started this list to share the monthly craft challenges I give my homeschooled kids with other moms who struggled to find the inspiration and/or time to come up with something their kids could do independently, incorporated a variety of skills and interests and didn’t require an exorbitant monetary investment.
I hope you will enjoy them, share them and please post pictures and links back to your results!
